New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave: Immortals, Footloose or Jack and Jill - Pick Your Poison

This Tuesday March 06, 2012 doesn't bring us any award-winning films, however, depending on the mood you happen to be in, it does bring in plenty of entertaining films.

1) There's no doubt if you read my review that I was never really impressed by Immortals - which to me felt like a bad mashup of 300 and the video game God of War - if you want a bit of action, this will fit the bill. There is plenty of violence to be had as mortals (and on occasion gods) battle each other over an artifact that has the power to release the long-dormant titans. Just don't go in expecting a mythology lesson as this is pure entertainment.

2) As far as remakes go, Footloose could have done a lot worse. While it may not have exactly burned up the dance floor, it looks like enough people enjoyed the ride that is should make a mild splash for home viewing. I still don't understand to need to update so many franchises - the 80s version works just find for me, thank you - no need to see how Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough handle things. for me.

3) Fresh off a record number of Razzie nominations, which I have a feeling is going to result in a record number or Razzie wins, you too can catch Adam Sandler in all his... glory? in Jack and Jill. Or you could just a sit in a classroom listening to someone scratch their nails across a chalkboard for an hour and a half - probably would result in the same amount of entertainment.

4) If you like your films a little more out there, I recommend Pedro Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In. Almodóvar is no stranger to getting a little kinky, but here he seems to be channeling a bit of David Cronenberg with the story of a brilliant plastic surgeon with a haunting past whose new "synthetic skin", and the patient he tests it on, all lead back to one tragic moment. Sounds intriguing, and if I get a chance to watch it, I think I will be thoroughly entertained.

On the Blu-Ray front, you have a few classics to choose from. Those who prefer comedy over anything else can bask in the glory that is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. One of my all-time favorites - endlessly quotable (for a nerd like me) and never boring, no matter how many times I watch it, even if you find British comedy a bit off, this is one you have to check out. Or I will taunt you a second time! But comedy fans who prefer things a bit more American also have Steve Martin in Parenthood, one of the many films Universal Studios is rolling out for their 100th Anniversary. While a little generic for my tastes, it still has Martin's appeal and is a good choice for family viewing. For war fans, it doesn't get much better than The Deer Hunter - another Universal film getting the 100th Anniversary upgrade. This film not only shows the war, but the way it affects things back home as well. Certainly one of the most brutally honest films about the Vietnam War and it should be a part of anyone's collection. If you prefer your movies a bit more classic, the duo of Cary Grant and Grace Kelly are here for a little crime, and a little romance with To Catch a Thief. I admit, I have yet to see this Alfred Hitchcock film, though considering how much I admire the director, I should add it to my list. Even if this is a bit more lighthearted than many of his other films, I have a feeling it will still be a great watch. Finally, if you want to put a little spice back into your life, it doesn't get too much hotter than 9 1/2 Weeks. Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke (yes, the one and only Mickey Rourke) get all hot and bothered as they begin a purely sexual relationship that eventually turns complicated. If that doesn't make you feel the heat, check your pulse.
